I have been reading my way through my manga selection, and I noticed most series tend to do a chapter devoted to putting their characters into a classic fairytale, more often then not Alice in Wonderland or Cinderella. So I thought to myself “what classic tale have I not seen yet?” I immediately thought of the written tale of the Nutcracker (not the ballet, since it cuts out quite a bit of the story).

In it, I remember the rat king visited the girl Clara several nights in a row. On the first night, he demanded she leave out all her Christmas sweets, and she did. The next morning, they had each been nibbled on (but not completely eaten) by mice, so that she could have none. The second night, he demanded her to leave out her breads. And on the third, her new Christmas dress. Of course, it’s on the third night that the Nutcracker comes to her rescue.

But I started thinking, which character would best handle the Rat King? I hadn’t drawn Mole in a long while and I missed her, so she was the obvious choice. Then I thought “…how would MOLE handle this situation?”

The rest, as they say, is history.
